The town

Lake Wales incorporated as a town in May 1917 and became a city in 1925, and it counted 16,361 residents at the 2020 Census. It sits on the Lake Wales Ridge, a sandy upland area running through the peninsula’s middle at an elevation of 128 feet, high ground for Florida and the reason the area holds pockets of native scrub land, including the 185-acre Grassy Lake Preserve behind a local elementary school.

The rules

Lake Wales is an incorporated city, and a street designation for golf carts would have to come from the city itself. We could not find one. Under F.S. 316.212 that means a standard sub-20-mph cart in Lake Wales stays on private property until the city designates and posts a street. Inside Lake Ashton, the community’s own rules govern its private roads. A low-speed vehicle under F.S. 316.2122, titled and registered, may use any street posted 35 mph or less.
